In short: A garden privacy screen in stone look gives you instant privacy and the calm, solid look of a rock wall – without the weight and wet work of natural stone. The proven method: a stable wall or solid structure built to the height you need, clad with handmade stone-effect panels on one or both sides, and optionally combined with lightweight landscape rocks. TerraDecor cladding costs from €140/m² including delivery within Europe and is resistant to frost, UV, water and impact.
Most gardens in Europe are overlooked by someone: a neighbour's terrace, an upstairs window, a footpath or a busy street. A hedge needs years, a wooden fence greys and needs oiling, and a plain rendered wall can feel like a prison yard. This guide compares the options, shows where a stone-look privacy wall makes sense and how to plan height, position and budget so the result feels like part of the landscape.

Where do you actually need a garden privacy screen?
Before choosing a material, stand where you want to sit and look around. Privacy is rarely needed along the whole boundary – usually only at a few "sightlines". Typical situations:
- The terrace next to the neighbour's terrace – a section of 3 to 6 metres often solves the problem completely.
- Windows above you – a higher screen close to your seating area works better than a tall wall at the boundary.
- The street side – here a longer wall also reduces the visual noise of cars and passers-by.
- Hot tub, outdoor shower or pool – areas where you want full privacy and a material that tolerates water.
- Bins, heat pumps, compost – a short screen hides technical corners you do not want to look at.
Tip: the closer the screen is to the person sitting, the lower it can be. A 1.8 m high wall right next to the lounge chair often covers more than a 2.5 m wall at the far end of the garden.
Garden privacy screen options compared
The table compares typical solutions in general terms. Local conditions and the quality of each product vary.
| Option | Privacy from day one | Typical depth | Maintenance | Look over the years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hedge | No – takes years | 50–100 cm and more | Cutting, watering | Green, gaps in winter for deciduous plants |
| Wooden screen | Yes | Slim | Oiling or painting | Greys, can warp |
| Gabions | Yes | Often 20–50 cm | Low | Technical look, wire mesh visible |
| Natural stone wall | Yes | Thick, needs foundation | Low to medium | Beautiful, but heavy and slow to build |
| Plain rendered wall | Yes | Wall thickness | Repainting, cracks | Flat, often looks bare |
| Wall clad with TerraDecor stone-look panels | Yes | Wall + relief from a few cm | Occasional cleaning | Real 3D rock, colours stay stable |
How a stone-look privacy wall is built
Our panels are cladding, not a free-standing fence. They need a stable, solid, dry and clean surface. In practice there are three routes:
- Clad an existing wall. A boundary wall, garage wall or retaining wall gets a new face. This is the fastest and cheapest route.
- Build a new wall and clad it. A local builder erects a masonry or concrete wall with a proper foundation at the height you want; we supply the stone-look surface for one or both sides.
- Clad a solid structure. Where a wall is not wanted, a rigid, weatherproof substructure planned by your installer can carry the panels – as long as it is stable, solid and dry.
Panels are glued with a suitable mounting adhesive in many situations, or screwed. Screw heads are hidden with caps made in the same colour and shape as the rock surface, and joints between modules are designed to be invisible. No heavy machinery, no grout, no weeks of drying time.

Five design ideas for a stone privacy screen
1. The rock backdrop behind the lounge
One section of rock wall, 4–6 m wide, directly behind the seating area. With 10–20 cm relief it casts real shadows in the evening light and turns the terrace into an outdoor room.
2. Staggered wall pieces instead of one long wall
Two or three offset wall sections with plants between them hide the view but keep air and light moving. The garden looks larger than with a continuous wall.
3. Privacy wall with water
Behind a hot tub or pool, the wall can include a waterfall or water spout. Our material comes from aquarium decoration and is fully water-resistant, so splash zones are no problem.
4. Rock wall plus boulders
Lightweight landscape rocks at the foot of the wall make it look as if the rock continues into the ground. Our landscape accent rocks are placed without cranes.
5. Mixed materials
Stone-look sections combined with wooden slats, a pergola or climbing plants. Stone gives the mass and calm, wood the warmth.
From the workshop: A privacy wall is seen from both sides, so many customers clad both faces – the neighbour's side calmer and lower in relief, their own side deeper and more dramatic. Every panel is handmade and hand-coloured, so there is no repeating pattern even on a long wall. And because our patented technology is unique – no one else in the world produces rock and stone imitations this way – a stone privacy wall from TerraDecor does not look like the one next door.
Height, neighbours and permits: what to check first
- Local rules. Maximum heights for boundary walls and the distance to the property line differ from country to country and often from municipality to municipality. Ask your local authority before building a new wall.
- Talk to the neighbour. Agreeing on height and the look of their side avoids conflict – a stone face on their side is usually welcomed.
- Wind and foundation. A new privacy wall must be planned by a builder for wind load and ground conditions. Our panels are lightweight and add little load to the structure.
- Drainage. Make sure rainwater can run off at the base and does not collect behind the wall.
What does a stone garden privacy screen cost?
Cladding costs €140/m² for relief depth up to 5 cm, plus €50/m² for each additional 5 cm (10 cm = €190/m², 20 cm = €290/m²). Landscape rocks start from €1,680/m³; pieces under 0.3 m³ carry a €50 small-production surcharge. Prices exclude VAT and include delivery within Europe; the final price is confirmed in a written offer. The wall itself, if newly built, is done by a local builder and is not included.
| Example | Area | Calculation | Price (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terrace screen 5 m × 1.8 m, one side, 5 cm relief | 9 m² | 9 × €140 | €1,260 |
| Same screen, your side 10 cm, neighbour's side 5 cm | 9 + 9 m² | 9 × €190 + 9 × €140 | €2,970 |
| Street-side wall 10 m × 2 m, one side, 10 cm relief | 20 m² | 20 × €190 | €3,800 |
| Hot-tub backdrop 3 m × 2 m, 20 cm relief | 6 m² | 6 × €290 | €1,740 |
Compared with a hedge, a stone privacy wall gives full privacy immediately. Compared with wooden screens, there is no oiling and no greying – and with a 20-year warranty, the cost per year stays low.

FAQ
Can I attach stone-look panels to a wooden fence?
Only if the structure is stable, solid and dry. A light slatted fence moves in the wind and is not a suitable base; a masonry wall or a rigid substructure planned by your installer is.
Will the stone look survive winter and summer sun?
Yes. The material is resistant to frost, UV, heat, water and impact – it does not crack or fade like painted foam or site-sprayed concrete.
How do I clean the wall?
With ordinary household cleaners and a soft brush, or mild abrasive cleaners when needed – even hydrochloric acid is possible, which natural limestone would not survive. Avoid wire brushes, knives and solvents.
Can the neighbour's side look different?
Yes. Both sides can have different relief depths or designs; each side is priced per m² of its own area.
