Relief Depth Explained: 3D Wall Cladding from 5 to 50 cm

What relief depth means, how light and viewing distance change the effect, and which depth from 5 to 50 cm suits which wall – with the full price table for 3D wall cladding.

In short: Relief depth is the single biggest decision in 3D wall cladding: it determines how strong the shadows are, how close you can stand before the illusion works best, how much room depth you give up and what the wall costs. TerraDecor makes real 3D relief from a few centimetres up to 50 cm. Price logic is simple: €140/m² up to 5 cm, plus €50/m² for every further 5 cm – delivery within Europe included.

Photos of 3D walls rarely tell you how deep the relief actually is. A printed panel and a 30 cm rock face can look similar in a small picture, yet in the room they are worlds apart. This guide explains what relief depth means, what changes between 5, 10, 20 and 50 cm, how light and viewing distance interact with depth, and how to choose the right depth for your wall and budget.

What does "relief depth" mean in 3D wall cladding?

Relief depth is the difference between the deepest and the most protruding point of the surface – how far the rock "comes out" of the wall. It is not the same as panel thickness or the depth of the joints. A wall with 5 cm relief already has real cracks, ledges and textures you can touch; a wall with 50 cm relief has overhangs, niches and boulders that cast long shadows.

Two things are important to understand:

  • Real relief versus printed relief. Many decorative panels are printed photos or shallow pressed patterns. They look three-dimensional only from straight ahead and in flat light. Real relief changes with every step you take and every hour of daylight.
  • Depth needs space. The deeper the relief, the more it projects into the room – plan furniture, doors and walkways accordingly.

How light turns depth into drama

A relief is only as strong as its shadows, and shadows depend on the angle of the light. Light falling almost parallel to the wall – from a ceiling spot close to the wall, an LED strip at floor level or low evening sun on a facade – stretches every shadow. Light from straight ahead flattens even a deep relief.

  • 5 cm relief comes alive with grazing light; in flat light it reads as a rich texture.
  • 10–20 cm relief produces visible shadow lines in almost any light – the typical choice for feature walls.
  • 30–50 cm relief creates its own light and dark zones even under diffuse light, like a real cliff.

Rule of thumb: plan the lighting together with the depth. A modest relief with good grazing light can look more spectacular than a deep relief lit badly.

Relief depth from 5 to 50 cm: which depth for which wall?

Relief depth Price per m² (excl. VAT) Effect Typical use
up to 5 cm €140 Tactile texture, fine cracks and layers Hallways, staircases, kitchens, bathrooms, behind furniture, facades
10 cm €190 Clear shadow lines, stones stand out Living-room and TV walls, bedrooms, offices, garden walls
15 cm €240 Pronounced rock face Restaurant and hotel feature walls, terraces
20 cm €290 Strong 3D effect from a distance Lobbies, spas, pool walls, large rooms
30 cm €390 Ledges and overhangs Wellness areas, wine cellars, showrooms
40 cm €490 Cliff-like, deep niches Grottos, waterfall walls, themed interiors
50 cm €590 Maximum drama, boulder-like forms Statement walls, pools, landscape scenes

Prices follow one formula: €140/m² up to 5 cm, plus €50/m² for each additional 5 cm, up to 50 cm. Delivery within Europe is included; the final price is confirmed in a written offer.

Five questions that decide the right depth

1. How far away will people usually stand?

In a narrow corridor you see the wall from 1–2 metres; fine texture is perceived perfectly and deep relief would get in the way. In a hotel lobby or across a pool, viewers are 5–15 metres away – here 20 cm or more is needed for the relief to read.

2. How much room depth can you spare?

Measure the free space in front of the wall. A deep relief behind a sofa that stands against the wall is wasted; in an empty end wall it is the star.

3. Will people touch or brush past it?

Staircases and hallways are touched every day. Moderate relief is more comfortable there. Our material is impact-resistant, but sharp-edged overhangs are not a good idea at shoulder height in a passageway.

4. Indoors or outdoors?

The material is resistant to water, UV, frost, heat and impact, so any depth works outdoors. Facades usually use up to 5–10 cm; garden and pool walls often go deeper.

5. What is the budget per wall?

For a 10 m² wall the range is €1,400 at 5 cm, €1,900 at 10 cm, €2,900 at 20 cm and €5,900 at 50 cm (excl. VAT). Sometimes one deep feature wall gives more effect than four shallow walls for the same money.

From the workshop: Every piece is modelled and hand-coloured, whatever its depth – there is no printed photo in our walls. With deeper relief the hand colouring matters even more: shadows in the recesses are painted darker, edges lighter, just as weathering would do in nature. Our patented technology lets us build deep relief that stays lightweight, which is why even 50 cm walls need no heavy machinery. No one else in the world produces rock and stone imitations this way.

Installation: does deeper relief mean more work?

Less than you might think. All depths are installed on a stable, solid, dry and clean surface – glued with a suitable adhesive in many situations, or screwed. Screw heads are hidden with caps made in the same colour and shape as the surface, and the joints between modules are designed to be invisible, so even a deep rock face looks like one continuous piece. No wet trades and no heavy machinery are needed, because the panels are lightweight. Large custom elements arrive on pallets with instructions for your installer.

Deep relief compared with other 3D wall solutions

  • Printed or shallow-pressed PVC and foam panels are cheaper per m², but the 3D effect is limited, patterns repeat and joints often show.
  • Natural stone cladding offers real depth, but it is heavy, often needs a load check and anchoring and is installed slowly with wet trades.
  • Site-sprayed concrete rockwork can be very deep, but it is very heavy and can crack, spall and lose colour over the years.
  • TerraDecor 3D wall cladding combines real depth up to 50 cm with low weight, no repeating pattern and a 20-year warranty.

FAQ

Can one wall have different relief depths?

Yes, custom designs can combine zones – for example a deep rock outcrop in the centre that fades into a shallower texture at the edges. Send us your idea; the written offer shows the exact price.

Does deep relief collect more dust?

Horizontal ledges collect some dust, as in nature. The surfaces are cleaned with ordinary household cleaners and a soft brush, or mild abrasive cleaners; even hydrochloric acid can be used. Avoid wire brushes, knives and solvents.

Is deep relief heavier on the wall?

Deeper relief uses more material, but our panels remain lightweight compared with natural stone or concrete. Your installer checks that the base is stable and solid.

Which depth is the most popular?

There is no single answer: hallways and kitchens often suit up to 5 cm, feature walls 10–20 cm, spas, pools and grottos 30 cm and more. Our FAQ answers more general questions.
