In short: Lightweight stone panels give you the depth, texture and colour of real rock without the 50 to 300 kg per square metre that natural stone or concrete rockwork often puts on a wall. TerraDecor panels are handmade, can be glued or screwed, work indoors and outdoors, cost from €140/m² including delivery within Europe and come with a 20-year warranty.
Many stone-wall dreams end the moment someone asks: "Can this wall actually carry it?" A plasterboard partition, the top floor of an old townhouse, an insulated facade or a slim column were never designed for a layer of real stone. Lightweight stone panels solve exactly this problem. This guide shows how heavy stone walls really are, where weight becomes a deal-breaker, how to tell a light but durable panel from a flimsy one, and what our 20-year warranty means in practice.

How heavy is a real stone wall?
Stone is dense. Granite, slate, basalt and most limestones weigh roughly 2.5 to 2.8 tonnes per cubic metre. Translated to a wall, every centimetre of stone thickness adds about 25 to 28 kg per square metre – before the adhesive mortar bed, which adds more. Concrete is only slightly lighter. The figures below are rounded orientation values for material classes, not data for individual products.
| Wall finish | Typical thickness | Approx. weight per m² | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin natural stone veneer | 2–3 cm | 55–85 kg + mortar bed | Load check on light walls, wet installation |
| Split-face natural stone | 5–10 cm | 130–270 kg + mortar bed | Needs a solid masonry wall, often a footing or anchors |
| Cast concrete stone veneer | 2–4 cm | 45–95 kg + mortar bed | Similar limits to thin natural stone |
| Site-sprayed concrete rockwork | 5–15 cm | 120–350 kg | Reinforcement mesh, days of wet work, structural input |
| TerraDecor lightweight stone panels | Relief from a few cm up to 50 cm | Lightweight | Glued or screwed on sound walls, no heavy machinery |
A 12 m² feature wall in split stone can therefore add well over a tonne to a single wall. A comparable wall in lightweight stone panels can be carried into the flat by hand.
Our tip: with natural stone, always add the finish and the mortar bed together and compare the total with what your wall may carry according to the manufacturer or a structural engineer. If the sum comes close to the limit, lightweight panels are not just the more convenient choice but the safer one – especially on large areas, above doors or on walls tied into timber ceilings.
Where lightweight stone panels make the difference
Plasterboard and stud walls
Drywall systems are common across Europe, from new apartments in Munich to loft conversions in Lyon. Their manufacturers specify maximum loads per square metre for tiling, and heavy stone quickly exceeds them. Lightweight panels let you create a stone look on partitions that would otherwise be off-limits.
Upper floors, old buildings and timber ceilings
In historic town centres – Vienna, Bologna, Ghent or Belgrade – many homes sit on old timber beams. Every extra tonne is a question for a structural engineer. Panels that weigh a fraction of stone keep the conversation simple.
Facades and insulated walls
On a facade, the weight of cladding must be carried by the wall and its fixings for decades, through wind, frost and heat. Lightweight facade panels reduce that load considerably. If your facade is insulated, ask your planner how the fixings will be anchored – lighter cladding always makes this easier.
Columns, ceilings, furniture and deep relief
Wrapping a column, a kitchen island or a reception desk in real stone is heavy and awkward. With light panels it becomes a normal fit-out job. And lightness is what makes deep relief possible at all: a rock face with 30 or 50 cm of relief in solid stone would be a structure, not a wall finish.

Lightweight does not have to mean flimsy
Polystyrene and thin PVC panels are lightweight too – and that is where many buyers get disappointed. They are usually printed or shallow-moulded, repeat the same pattern every metre, show joints, dent at the first knock and can yellow or fade in sunlight. Before you buy any lightweight stone panel, check these points:
- Real relief or a print? Real 3D depth casts its own shadows under side light. A print looks flat as soon as the light changes.
- Impact resistance. Press a thumbnail into a sample. If it leaves a mark, a chair or a vacuum cleaner will too.
- Indoor and outdoor rating. Water, UV, frost and heat resistance decide whether a panel suits a bathroom, a terrace or a facade.
- Repeating pattern. Look at a photo of a large wall. Identical modules side by side give away a fake immediately.
- Safety. Ask whether the material is non-toxic and odourless – important in bedrooms, kitchens and children's rooms.
- Warranty and exclusions. A long warranty only means something if the exclusions are clear.
TerraDecor panels are lightweight yet extremely durable: resistant to water, UV radiation, heat, frost, impact and acids, non-toxic, odourless and eco-friendly. Every piece is handmade and hand-coloured, so no two panels are identical and the wall never shows a repeat.
From the workshop: Our roots are in Aquadecor, which has made handmade 3D aquarium backgrounds since 2004 – objects that must be light, rock-hard and safe for living animals at the same time. TerraDecor uses our patented technology: no one else in the world produces rock and stone imitations this way. That is how a panel can look like a 20 cm deep cliff and still be glued to a wall.
Installing lightweight stone panels: what changes in practice
Low weight changes the whole project, not only the load on the wall:
- Delivery: panels arrive packed – large orders on pallets – and delivery within Europe is included in the price.
- Handling: no crane, no lifting gear, no heavy machinery; the panels can be carried up stairs.
- Fixing: on almost any stable, solid, dry and clean surface, panels are glued with a suitable mounting or foam adhesive in many situations, or screwed. Screw heads are hidden with caps made in the same colour and shape as the surface, so they disappear.
- Joints: modules are designed so that joints are invisible – no grout lines.
- Time and mess: no wet trades, no drying time, very little dust. A room is usually usable again much sooner than after a natural-stone job.
What the 20-year warranty covers
A lightweight panel is only a good deal if it lasts. TerraDecor gives a 20-year warranty on its cladding, and on selected products up to lifetime. Not covered are mishandling, improper installation, damage from sharp objects, aggressive chemicals or solvents, and modifications to the product. In everyday use that means: install according to our instructions, avoid knives and wire brushes, and the wall is designed to keep its look for decades. Cleaning is easy – ordinary household cleaners work, and even hydrochloric acid can be used, which would etch and destroy limestone, marble or travertine.

What do lightweight stone panels cost?
The price depends on the relief depth: €140/m² up to 5 cm, plus €50/m² for every additional 5 cm, up to 50 cm. Prices exclude VAT, include delivery within Europe and are confirmed in a written offer. Some examples:
| Project | Area | Relief depth | Price (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room feature wall on a stud wall | 12 m² | up to 5 cm | €1,680 |
| Same wall with stronger shadows | 12 m² | 10 cm | €2,280 |
| Rock wall in an attic lounge | 8 m² | 20 cm | €2,320 |
| Facade section of a detached house | 30 m² | up to 5 cm | €4,200 |
What you save is often not on the panel invoice: no structural reinforcement for the stone load, no crane, no weeks of wet work, and no repainting or replacement after a few years.
FAQ
Are lightweight stone panels suitable for plasterboard walls?
Yes, provided the wall is stable, solid, dry and clean. Because the panels are light, they suit partitions where real stone would exceed the permitted load. Follow our installation instructions for glue or screws.
Do light panels sound hollow or look fake?
They are handmade with real relief from a few centimetres up to 50 cm and hand-coloured, so they cast natural shadows and show no repeating pattern. From normal viewing distance they read as rock.
Can lightweight stone panels be used outdoors?
Yes. The material resists water, frost, UV radiation, heat and acid rain, so it is used for facades, garden walls and pool areas as well as interiors.
Can I install them myself?
Installation is done by you or your installer, following TerraDecor instructions. No heavy machinery or wet trades are needed.
